INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED JAZZ HARPIST COMES TO PHILADELPHIA

Park Stickney

In collaboration with Temple University, the Philadelphia Chapter is presenting Park Stickney in a solo recital, Thursday, October 16th, at 7:30 p.m. in Temple's Klein Recital Hall. Park's popularity brings him back to Philadelphia for the third time. His last appearance, in 2005, was a duo-harp tour with electro-celtic harpist Rüdiger Oppermann. If you have never heard Park Stickney live, now is your opportunity to see what everyone is talking about!

After winning the first International Jazz and Pop Harp Festival and finishing his studies at the Juilliard School in New York, Park has traveled across Europe, Asia and the U.S., as a soloist and teacher, as well as with a variety of ensembles whose music ranges from jazz to classical to rock.

Stickney has toured Hong Kong, India, and Sri Lanka four times with harpist Daphne Hellman (1995-98), taught and performed at the Umbria Jazz Festival in conjunction with the Berklee College of Music (1998), given workshops and concerts in Scotland for the Edinburgh Harp Festival (2006, 2004, 2000, 1991), the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival (1996), and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (1998, 1996). In France, he has taught and given concerts at the Academy of Pierre Jamet in Gargilesse (1999, 1997), the "Journées de la Harpe." in Arles, and the Festival de Harpe in Avesnois. Stickney was a guest soloist at the Soka Harp Festival in Japan, the first two Caribbean Harp Festivals in Puerto Rico, the Kansas City Festival of the Harp, the Adelaide Harp Festival, and the 2002, 1999 and 1996 World Harp Congresses.

Stickney recorded his first CD "Overdressed Late Guy," in 1995, which was followed by a sequel "Action Harp Play Set" in 1999. In Summer 2005 he released "Still,Life with Jazz Harp," a solo CD.

The ticket prices are $25, $20 for AHS members and seniors, $15 for students and FREE for anyone with a Temple ID (staff or student). The tickets will be sold at the door. Klein Recital Hall is located on the 2nd floor of Temple University's Presser Hall, on the NE Corner of 13th and Norris Streets. Click here to download a PDF map of the campus. Chapter News

Saul Davis Zlatkovsky was mentioned twice in the new edition of Harps and Harpists by Roslyn Rensch.
Saul Davis Zlatkovsky is planning the upcoming Harp Music Festival of Philadelphia, June 13-15th, 2008 at Church of the Holy Trinity, on Rittenhouse Square. Programs will feature Joan Holland of the Interlochen Arts Academy faculty who is giving a recital and master class and Alice Chalifoux's centenary. We will have a tour of the Calderwood gallery's Witold Gordon art collection (designer of the Salzedo model harp). The festival master classes will be given by Saul Davis Zlatkovsky, Joan Holland and possibly Karen Thielen. The master classes for intermediate-advanced students, college-level and professional harpists, may start as early as January, so contact him right away. For more information see the website, www.harpmusicfest.com or call (215) 563-4848 or email harpmusicfest@yahoo.com. Volunteers are needed (a good way to get free tickets).
Our secretary-elect, Alison Reese, moved to Michigan in October. There will be a brief meeting following the competition winner's recital on Feb. 3rd (approx. 2 pm) in Rowan's Wilson Hall lobby to nominate and elect a secretary for our AHS chapter. Your participation is appreciated.
